FAA News:
District Banquet/Meeting: Cayla Schwartz was elected District treasurer at the El Rancho District FFA meeting. Cory Multer won the District talent contest and advances to Area competition.
Student receiving banners were: Senior Creed - Marissa Schwartz 3rd; Jr. Quiz Lauren Plagens, Tyler Bednar, Emily Gully, Britton Avery 3rd; Job Interview Tyler Bednar 1st, Cory Multer 2nd; Jr. Skills Travis Gully, Cole Schwartz, Levi Schaefer 1st; Sr. Skills Jason Flores, Garrett Kellermeier, Dusty Walker 1st.
Ag Mechanics Contest: Grant Schwartz and Cayla Schwartz placed 1st as a team representing the Glasscock County FFA Chapter at the South-Central Texas Farm and Ranch Ag Mechanics contest in Columbus April 29. Their trailer was 2nd in Class, and 2nd in Division; their tractor was Reserve Champion of the Division. In addition, Grant was 2nd high individual and Cayla was 3rd high individual in the tractor technician contest in which students must troubleshoot and repair 5 problems in a new tractor.
Bean-Cooking Contest: The FFA-sponsored bean-cooking contest, which had 10 entries, was deemed a success. Winners were: 1st place 1st Grade Frijoles (Tanya Multer and the 1st grade class); 2nd Beanies with no Wienies (Cecilia Schwartz and Candy Jones); 3rd Tired Teachers (Christi Long and Dana Cook). Winners of the bean-eating contest were: Coach Garcia 1st; Colton Schwartz 2nd; Doug Cmerek 3rd.
SPORTS:
Tennis: State Meet: Garden City Boys Doubles Team of Alex Halfmann and Taylor Niehues Win Class 1A State Meet. Evan Jansa and Nick Sanchez finished third overall, bringing home a bronze medal.
Niehues and Halfmann defeated Roel Perez and Jose Vela of Frost 6-3, 6-2 and reached the finals after beating Steven McArthur and Chase Robles of Knippa in a three-set match 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). In the finals, they defeated Blake Cuba and Jared Heine of Thorndale 6-0, 6-4 for the championship.
Jansa and Sanchez defeated Aaron Mewbourn and Cody Mewbourn of Martins Hill 7-5, 6-4, before falling in the semifinals to McArthur and Robles 6-2, 7-6.
Varsity Regional meet: Both Garden City boys doubles teams advanced to the state tournament. Alex Halfmann and Taylor Niehues, who were the #1 seed, won the championship match over Bearkat teammates Evan Jansa and Nick Sanchez. Jansa and Sanchez advanced to state by winning a playback match.
In mixed doubles, Lyza Lopez and Jeffery Pierson won their first round match and then lost to the tourneys top seed in the second round.
Track: Regional Meet: Five students qualified for the regional track meet from the area meet. Results were: Boys Cory Multer, Discus 4th, Shot Put DNP; Jason Flores 800m 5th; Girls Vikki Garza 3200m 8th; Lauren Wheeler 400m DNP; KLann Niehues Triple Jump DNP. No regional qualifiers advanced to the state meet.
Golf: Regionals The Lady Kats placed fifth overall in the Region II-A tournament. Brooke Halfmann was ninth in the medalist standings with a two-day score of 191. Other team member scores were: Kayla Medrano 197, Erin Hirt 212, Mikela Barton 213, and Amy Multer 213.
The Bearkats took seventh place in the tournament. Chase OBrien led the boys team, finishing with a 161. Additional team scores were: Eric Hirt 165, Taylor Niehues 177, Cory Muter 182 and Sam Long 191.
Neither team advanced to the state golf tournament.
