In The Spotlight


•  Bonnie Braden will graduate from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree on May 20.  Bonnie, a 1998 GCHS graduate and the daughter of Kenneth and Shirley Braden of St. Lawrence, plans to work for United Supermarket Pharmacies in Amarillo.

•  Tyler Bednar is valedictorian and Katie Gully salutatorian of the 2006 class at GCHS. Tyler, the son of Jimmy and Sandy Bednar, plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in petroleum engineering.  Katie is the daughter of Rodney Gully and Kelly Gully and is interested in a medical career.

   Other graduates are: Cade Doss, Tracy Eggemeyer, Anthony Garza, Angela Hoelscher, Landon Hoelscher, Garrett Kellermeier, Shaun Maxie, Kayla Medrano, Cory Multer, Jeremy Randel, Grant Schwartz, K.C. Smith, Uriel Talamantes and Dusty Walker.

•  Garden City’s UIL academic team recently won the state Class 1-A championship.   Contestants were Tyler Bednar, Tracy Eggemeyer, Katie Gully, Erin Hirt, Julie Hirt, Wade Jansa, Cory Multer, Taylor Niehues, Colton Schwartz and Jake Schwartz. They scored a total of 158.5 points, while their closest competitor, Lindsay High, scored 110.  (See individual results in From the Schoolhouse.)

• Bearkats Alex Halfmann and Taylor Niehues both juniors, won the University Interscholastic League Class 1-A state championship in boys’ doubles tennis May 9 at the Lakeway World of Tennis near Austin. Taylor is the son of Tibby and Rory Niehues; Alex is the son of Tammy and Butch Halfmann. (See more in From the Schoolhouse.)

 Evan Jansa and Nick Sanchez took third place in boys’ doubles at the UIL state tennis tournament    May 8. Evan, a junior, is the son of Alan Jansa and Lisa Jansa; Nick, a sophomore, is the son of Maria and Jose Salazar. (See more in From the Schoolhouse.)
