School Hires Football Coach;

Assistant Principal


The GCISD School Board, meeting in regular session May 8 (Tibby Niehues absent), hired Vance Jones as the head football coach and Randy Gartman as a part-time assistant principal. Jones will be paid a total of $53,270 for coaching and teaching. (He is certified to teach social studies, health and P.E.)  Gartman will receive a stipend of $5,500 on an 11-month contract. Ken Hoskins will continue as athletic director.

Jones has been the football coach at Aspermont for the past two years and was at Sanderson for the previous eight years.  He has a six-man football coaching record of 118-27.  His six-man teams have been in play-offs ten times, won district championships seven times, bi-district championships eight times, regional championships five times, quarter-final championships four times, semi-final championships three times, and the state championship once (1976).

Jones is a 1965 graduate of Marathon High School and a 1971 graduate of Tarleton State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. His wife, Hortensia, is a retired English teacher and coach. Their daughter, Annika Jo, is a junior at Angelo State University.

The board accepted Holly Ann Petree’s resignation and also approved a summer school session May 30 to June 26, which approximately 30 students will attend. The board also approved hiring seven students for summer work at the school.

Enrollment is 159 in grades PK – 6, 47 in grades 7 and 8, and 83 in grades 9–12, for a total of 289.
