School Hires Band Director


                GCISD’s school board on May 10 hired Conrad Flusche as the new band director. Flusche is a 1999 graduate of West Texas A & M with a bachelor’s degree in music. From August of 2002 to the present, he has been the head band director at Sunray Junior High, and was the All-Region Coordinator as well. For the 2000 – 2002 school years, he was the assistant band director at Dumas High School, and for the 1999-2000 school year, was the assistant band director at Canyon High School. His wife, Kristi, is also a music major and teacher, but she will not be working. The couple has two girls, ages five and two.

                The board accepted a $75,000 bid to resurface the school’s track and runways, and to re-do the high jump pit. No one was sure how long it has been since the track was resurfaced, but the guesses were between eight and twelve years. Athletic Director Ken Hoskins said tracks get harder and crack with time. He said there should be about 65 kids in track and field next year.  School Superintendent Steve Long said upkeep and maintenance of facilities is expensive, but necessary.      

The board also approved bids for two Bluebird route busses, one a 77-passenger, and one a 54-passenger, at a cost of $54,000 and $52,000 respectively. Long said one of the busses could also be used as an activities bus. He said the school had planned to buy two new busses this year and the 77-passenger one damaged in an April accident will not be replaced.

                GCISD enrollment is: K – 6, 150; Pre-K, 15; 7 – 12, 126, for a district-wide total of 291.

                Average daily public use of the fitness equipment: January, 66; February, 47; March, 37; April, 30.

                In other matters, Long reported that fans are being put into the auditorium; the board accepted Maria Medrano’s resignation from the cafeteria, and the board asked Long to discuss with county officials the possibility of putting pull-offs at all bus stops where there is room.
